Census 2027 process begins: Govt issues notification; first population count since 2011

NEW DELHI: The government on Monday notified Census 2027, officially commencing the process to count the country’s population, in what will be the first such exercise since 2011.The notification in this regard was issued by the Ministry of home affairs (MHA).

For the first time, the national census will also include caste enumeration as well.Earlier, in a June 4 press release, the MHA announced that the reference date for the national population count will be March 1, 2027, for all states and Union territories, except the Union territory of Ladakh, and the snow-bound areas in each of Jammu and Kashmir (UT), as well as Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh (both states).For these areas, the reference date will be October 1, 2026.The previous census was conducted by the erstwhile Congress-led UPA government in two phases – April to September 2010, and February 2011. The exercise recorded a population of 1,210,854,977 or over 1.21 billion.
